More than a decade after it began, take-your-kid-to-work day appears to be losing steam. Now it’s “Keep Your Children In School” day. The event was launched in 1993 and has always fallen on the fourth Thursday in April. But that date has drawn complaints from school administrators for well over a decade, especially because many standardized tests fall on or near the same day.

Educators, after playing along gamely for years, have begun pushing back against an event designed to hijack an entire school day and override carefully planned curricula.
Thursday marked the 17th year for Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. But some school districts sent strongly worded letters or e-mails to parents explaining that taking a child to work would put the youngster’s education at risk. At Dell Inc. for instance, most of the focus was on Earth Day, not Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.

A Medical Transcriptionist Is…
Medical transcription, also known as MT, is a health or medical office profession, in which voice-recorded reports as dictated by physicians or other healthcare professionals, are converted into text format. This text may be printed and placed in the patient’s record or retained in electronic format. Medical transcription can be performed by MTs who are employees in a hospital or who work at home as telecommuting employees for the hospital.
An individual who performs medical transcription is known as a medical transcriptionist or an MT. The equipment the MT uses is called a medical transcriber. The term transcriber describes the electronic equipment used in performing medical transcription, e.g., a cassette player with foot controls operated by the MT for report playback and transcription. Medical transcriptionists are sometimes also given the title of Medical Language Specialist or Health Information Management (HIM) paraprofessional.
Medical Transcriptionists work as telecommuting employees or independent contractors for an outsourced service are often employed by hospitals, doctors offices, clinics, physician groups and other healthcare providers. MTs who can consistently and accurately transcribe multiple document work-types and return reports within a reasonable turnaround-time (TAT) are sought after. TATs set by the service provider or agreed to by the transcriptionist should be reasonable but consistent with the need to return the document to the patient’s record in a timely manner.
Obtaining a certificate from a medical transcription training program does not entitle an MT to use the title of Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT). The CMT credential is earned by passing a certification examination conducted solely by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), formerly the American Association for Medical Transcription (AAMT), as the credentialing designation they created. AHDI also offers the credential of Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT). According to AHDI, the RMT is an entry-level credential while the CMT is an advanced level.
But the good news is – you do not need the CMT to be hired if you at least have passed a basic Medical Transcription training program. You can also obtain your CMT at a later time in order to increase your salary.
A Medical Biller is…
Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims to insurance companies in order to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. The same process is used for most insurance companies, whether they are private companies or government-owned.
The medical billing process is an interaction between a healthcare provider and the insurance company or payer. The level of service, once determined by qualified medical staff after the patients exam, is translated into a five digit procedure code from the Current Procedural Terminology CPT. The verbal diagnosis is translated into a numerical code as well, drawn from the ICD-9-CM. These two codes, a CPT and an ICD-9-CM, are equally important for claims processing. Once the procedure and diagnosis codes are determined, the medical biller will transmit the claim to the insurance company (payer). This is usually done electronically by formatting the claim as an ANSI 837 file and using Electronic Data Interchange to submit the claim file to the payer directly or via a clearinghouse. About 30% of medical claims get sent to payers using paper forms -all the rest are either manually entered or entered using automated recognition or OCR software.
Medical billers are encouraged, but not required by law to become certified by taking an exam such as the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist Exam (CMRS Exam). However, most medical billers choose to work from home and start earning money first and then get their certification later. Certification is generally not required to be hired to work from home, however experience or coding and billing TRAINING is required in order to land a job.
A Medical Coder is…
In medical billing, a medical coder is an individual who uses a set of published codes for reporting services provided by a health care provider to an insurer of the recipient of the care. Medical billing is the process of transforming descriptions of medical diagnoses and procedures into universal medical code numbers. The diagnoses and procedures are usually taken from a variety of sources within the medical record, such as the transcription of the doctor’s notes, laboratory results, radiologic results, and other sources. These diagnosis and procedure codes are used by government health programs, private health insurance companies, workers’ compensation carriers and others.
This process is necessary in order to be able to submit a claim against the recipient’s insurance policy for any of the services or items sold to a patient. The codes are also used by local and national governments and private healthcare organizations to conduct research and gather statistcal data about certain conditions, the treatment of those conditions and the outcome of the treatment.
Medical coders do not necessarily need to be certified to work from home although it is helpful. The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) offers the popular CPC coding credentials. The Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC) and Professional Association of Health care Coding Specialists (PAHCS) both offer credentialing in specialty coding. The National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA) offers a credential as a Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR). Generally, medical coders will be hired to work from home if they either have previous coding or billing experience or they have completed a Coding Training Program. Home based medical coders will also need good oral and written communication skills as they often serve as liaisons between healthcare facilities, insurance companies, and other establishments. Candidates proficient with computer software and technology will be appealing to employers as healthcare facilities continue to adopt electronic health records.
